Comment: Following up on the success of the V 200.0, orders were placed with Krauss-Maffei in 1960 for the construction of the class V 200.1. Designed for both heavy passenger and freight service, the already proven design principles of the V 200.0 were to be applied, however with increased performance 1,986 kilowatts (2,700 horsepower). The first unit was placed into service on November 27, 1962 and the first 20 units of the class V 200.1 were running on the route from Lindau to Munich starting in the summer of 1963. A total of 50 locomotives were delivered by 1965. In 1968, the class V 200.1 was given the new designation of class 221. Over time the area of use changed. These locomotives were still in express service in the beginning but they gradually moved over to being the motive power for heavy freight trains in the North and West of Germany.

Comment: The class V 200 was one of the flagships of the German Federal Railroad (DB) in the 1950s and 1960s. It was also a symbol that the era of steam technology was fast nearing its end. The original color scheme chosen for this class with the impressive, large lettering "DEUTSCHE BUNDESBAHN" is probably the most popular version of the V 200. The structural changes in the motive power for the German Federal Railroad emerged as early as 1949/50. A contract was awarded for the development of a two-motor diesel locomotive with 2,000 horsepower and hydraulic power transmission to replace the class 01. The plan was for these locomotives to handle the medium and heavy passenger trains on main lines, just as the 01 was doing. Krauss-Maffei in Munich was given the contract for the construction of the first five prototype locomotives. Motors for these units came from five manufacturers: Mercedes-Benz, MAN and Maybach. The two V 12 diesel motors installed in the V 200 produced 1,000 horsepower each. Hydraulic transmissions from Maybach and Voith transmitted the power to the trucks. The motors and gear drives from the different manufacturers were interchangeable with each other. In 1953, locomotive road number V 200 001 was finally presented to the public at the Transportation Exhibition in Munich. One year later the first five locomotives entered a test period. The experience from this made it prudent to increase the power for each motor to 1,100 horsepower. The practical limits of the motors in terms of power were approached within the framework of these tests for the locomotive. In 1955, construction of the 81 regular production locomotives was begun. MAK in Kiel and Krauss-Maffei both participated in the production of this group of locomotives. The maximum speed was 140 km/h or 88 mph. After these locomotives were retired, several of them ended up in Switzerland, where they were used with success a while longer in maintenance trains. Several former DB locomotives even went to Saudi Arabia for use in laying track. Several museum locomotives have also been preserved in the class V 200

DR cl 132 Ludmilla Diesel Locomotive

Model: The locomotive has a built-in digital decoder for operation with DCC, Selectrix, and Selectrix 2. The motor has a flywheel. 4 axles powered. Traction tires. One-time series on the anniversary "25 Years of the Fall of the Wall".

Comment: The DR Class 132 After decisions taken at the 6th German Communist Party Conference the change in motive power in the GDR was clearly to be accelerated. A 3,000 horsepower diesel locomotive was planned to speed up retirement of steam locomotives. This diesel built on the good results with the DR V 200. The installed of electric train heating was planned especially for passenger train service. A first six-axle prototype locomotive was built by the Soviet manufacturer, the "October Revolution" locomotive builder in Lugansk, Ukraine (from 1972 on: Woroschilowgrad), as the V 300 001 in 1969 and was presented to the public at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1970. Since the electric train heating was still being developed, the DR initially was only able to put units of the classes 130 and 131 with this equipment into operation. At the end of 1972, the electric train heating was finally operational and reliable. This allowed delivery of the class 132 with its maximum speed of 120 km/h / 75 mph to begin. Between 1973 and 1982, 709 units were placed into service. Their frames and the two three-axle trucks were built up of welded sheet metal and stamped metal shapes. The locomotive bodies consisted of sheet metal panels and stamped metal shapes with side reinforcement ribs and they were welded to the frames. The locomotives were powered by a 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel motor with turbocharging and a continuous rating of 2,200 kilowatts (3,000 horsepower), which provided the necessary current to the six DC traction motors wired in series by means of a motive power generator. A supplemental heating generator provided current by means of the heating lines to power the lighting, air conditioning, and other users. Due to their large quantities, these locomotives soon hauled a large percentage of the trains on non-electrified routes. These units were jokingly called "Ludmilla" by West German railroad fans after the reunification of East and West Germany. A special honor was bestowed on the class 132 starting on October 1, 1989. Starting at Reichenbach/Vogtland it hauled trains with the GDR embassy refugees from Prague west to Hof in Bavaria. This marked a critical point in the "Turning Point" that occurred with the rapid collapse of the GDR a month later. The drastic slump in freight traffic after the collapse of East Germany soon resulted in a great oversupply of DR diesel locomotives. In the following years, many "Ludmillas" were taken out of service or were rebuilt. Currently there are about 70 units in use as the class 232 as part of the motive power roster of DB Schenker Rail Germany, Inc.

Comment: DR "Hamburg Design" SVT 137 225 The VT 877a/b introduced a revolution in express train service on the German State Railroad (DRG). As the "Fliegender Hamburger" / "Flying Hamburger" this diesel-powered rail car with its top speed of 160 km/h / 100 mph ran for the first time in regularly scheduled service on the 287 kilometer / 179 mile long route Berlin - Hamburg on May 15, 1933 and required only two hours and 18 minutes to do it. This corresponded to a speed of 124.8 km/h / 78 mph. Building on the results with this powered rail car, the DRG order 13 similar powered double rail cars as the "Hamburg" design (SVT 137 149-152 and 224-232). A slightly altered end shape as well as the installation of a Scharfenberg coupler were the most noticeable differences from the original "Hamburger". The car bodies of all of these units were an aerodynamic lightweight steel design with frame construction. The 302 kilowatt / 405 horsepower Maybach diesel motors sat in both trucks along with the main generators. The gear drive was done with DC axle-hung motors in the center Jakobs truck. Starting in 1935 these diesel-powered rail cars learned to fly and the DRG revolutionized its schedule with a unique network of fast powered rail car routings. The era of the famous "Flying Trains" had begun but was unfortunately rather short. From Berlin you could reach in addition to Hamburg also Cologne, Frankfurt/Main, Basle, Stuttgart, Munich, Breslau, and even Beuthen. The express powered rail car service ended with the start of the war. After the end of the war, these beautifully shaped express powered rail cars scattered to the four winds. Two "Hamburger" ended up after 1945 in the area of the subsequent GDR. Road number SVT 137 226 was not put back into service and the DR rebuilt road number SVT 137 225 as a salon train by February 1951/52. It was available in this state until October of 1981 to important members of the GDR Transportation Ministry. Designated as a museum train, it then began its second career during which it was allowed to participate in the anniversary exhibition "150 Years of Railroading in Germany" in Nürnberg. This was done with an official GDR "Authorization to Travel Abroad" in the summer of 1985. After the collapse of East Germany road number SVT 137 225 underwent one last main overhaul and was returned externally to its original condition with the original elegant beige/violet paint scheme. It can be admired today in non-operational condition on the museum track at the Leipzig main station.
