Programming New Marklin Decoders

PROGRAMMING THE NEW Marklin DECODERS WITH THE  INTELLIBOX

The "new" decoders that come with some Marklin locomotives beginning in 2004 no longer have "DIP" switches which set or identify the digital address. The potentiometers that adjust the high-end speed and acceleration / braking are also no longer physically accessible. In order to change the decoder address and/or modify the speed and acceleration / braking parameters, you must now "program" this type of decoder. This is accomplished via a series of steps on the Marklin 6021 Controller and are explained in the book that comes with each locomotive. Below are the steps that must be performed to accomplish this programming with the Intellibox. Be sure to read the instructions that come with each locomotive so you know which parameters you want to adjust as well as the allowable values.

Step Description
1. Turn on the Intellibox.
2. Set Special Option No. 25  to “0”.
3. Set Special Option No. 907 to “1”.
4. Note the original settings of these Special Options to return to them when programming is complete.
5. Make certain that the knobs are set in the AC mode. (This is the default.)
6. Put the locomotive on the track.
7. Reset the Intellibox by pressing the STOP and GO buttons at the same time.
8. Call up the address of the loco or address 80.
9. Put the data format for this address (loco address or address 80) in the old Motorola format.
10. Pick up the end of the loco with the slider until it and the wheels are not touching the track.
11. With your other hand press the speed controller and keep it pressed.
12. Put the loco back the track and the lights should blink to show it is in the programming mode.
13. Follow the instructions that come with the loco to program the address and the various other settings.
As an alternative to lifting the locomotive off the track and replacing it, you
can install a simple on/off switch to cut / restore power to the track section.
The following steps can then be used to simplify the process:
1-9. As above.
10. Open the switch cutting the power to the track.
11. Press the speed controller and keep it pressed.
12. Close the switch and the lights should blink to show it is in the programming mode.
13. Follow the instructions that come with the loco to program the address and the various other settings.
As another alternative to lifting the locomotive off the track or installing an on/off switch,
you can simply switch the Intellibox briefly to "Programming" mode. This effectively
cuts all power to the track. Changing back (out of Programming mode) will then have
the same effect of restoring power to the track (without the need of a separate switch).
