Comment: Soon after the start of World War I, the German war ministry realized that the variety of different steam locomotives not only greatly affected railroad operations important to the war but also their maintenance. In 1915, the war ministry therefore promoted the development of a powerful standard design freight locomotive with an axle load (16 metric tons) as low as possible. In order to get to a conclusion quickly, a commission was formed consisting of representatives of the railroads and also of the military. In the end, the Prussian members imposed the construction of a 2-10-0 super-heated steam locomotive. At the start of 1917, the Borsig Works were given the contract to generate designs for the new locomotive. Borrowing from a 2-10-0 locomotive for Turkey, the new "standard design locomotive" was developed in a very short time. The first units were finished in 1917 and were given the designation G 12 in Prussia, Württemberg, and Baden. In Saxony, the G 12 was run as the XIII H. With a boiler height of 3,000 mm / 118-1/8", a Belpaire firebox, and a continuous bar frame, these units had nothing more in common with the Prussian tradition of building locomotives. The low bar frame allowed the firebox to be placed on the frame and above all to be widened on the sides compared to the previous sheet metal frame. For the first time the grate surface could be done not only in terms of grate length but also in terms of grate width. Other new features were the Coale design safety valves as well as equipping the locomotive with a feed water cleaner. Between 1917 and 1921, 1,158 units were built for the Prussian State Railways alone and later for the DRG by AEG, Borsig, Hanomag, Henschel, Krupp, Linke-Hofmann, Rheinmetall, and Schichau. The Baden, Württemberg, and Saxon state railroads purchased other class G 12 locomotives. In the DRG renumbering plan of 1925 the Baden G 12 units mutated to the DRG class 58.2-3, the Saxon G 12 (sä. XIII H) to the class 58.4, the Württemberg G 12 to the class 58.5, and the Prussian G 12 to the class 58.10-21. They were used in almost all of the German State Railroad districts. World War II moved numerous units abroad such as to Bulgaria, Austria, and Poland. Those units remaining on the DB were retired by 1953. The locomotives on the DR were by contrast indispensable for a longer period and ran in their original version until 1976 in the Erzgebirge area. Several G 12 units have remained preserved, among them the operational road number 58 311 of the Ulm Railroad Fans.

Comment: Unforgettable Branch Line Growlers. The experiences with the single-motor class VT 95 (later the class 795) rail busses developed by the firm Waggonfabrik Uerdingen proved the basic suitability of these units for the urgently necessary modernization of branch line service. At the same time, the class VT 95's power plant was too weak for routes with grades, particularly when operated with trailer units. For that reason, three prototypes of the class VT 98.9 (later the class 798.9) rail bus equipped with two 150 horsepower / 110 kilowatt Büssing motors followed a year later. These units fulfilled to a large extent the expectations set for them. However, the three test units still had Scharfenberg center couplers and lightweight spring-loaded metal straps for protection against contact with locomotives and cars with regular buffers.Delivery of the regular production two-motor class 98.95 (later the class 798.5) rail busses began in 1955. Compared to the test prototypes, the 329 units built were equipped with newly developed frames for the wheel sets with improved running characteristics as well as standard prototype couplers, regular buffers, and a standard design brake system. This enabled these more powerfully motorized rail cars to also pull transfer freight cars if necessary. In addition, the VT 98 units had a form of multiple unit control that enabled not only shuttle operation, but also the control of a motor car at the other end of the train. Suitable control cars (VS 98) and trailer cars (VM 98) were also placed into service to go with these powered rail cars. These crimson rail bus sets quickly defined the look on German branch line routes, where they quickly replaced the trains that previously were still hauled by steam locomotives. The Uerdingen rail bus sets left an enduring impression on the memory of many railroad passengers: For decades, these red growlers were synonymous for mobility in rural areas. The hearts of many railroad users still belong to these lovable "branch line saviors" from the time when they were placed into service.

Comment: T18400 - Type Post 4mg-al/26 Railroad Mail CarAfter the new DB had decided at the start of the Fifties on 26.4 meter / 85 foot 10 inch cars as a standard for passenger cars, the German Federal Postal System also quickly saw the advantages of these long cars. It therefore contracted for a design partnership under the coordination of the car builder Uerdingen to develop 26.4 meter / 85 foot 10 inch railroad mail cars for express trains. In line with the state of the technology, the following requirements were made such as the widening of the sliding doors for container service, increasing the load weight from 20 to 25 metric tons, car bodies fitting in with the appearance of the DB cars, installation of an air heating and dust removal system as well as rubber diaphragms with roll-down doors.Out of this came railroad mail cars that externally blended marvelously with the new DB cars. Their car bodies were done with welded steel shape construction using self-supporting unit body construction in which the skirting was a component part of the side sills. Their windows consisted of safety glass with wire reinforcement and were almost flush with the outer wall. Particular emphasis was put on good warmth and noise insulation. Their interior space consisted of a functional three-part division into a letter area, finished mail pouch area, and a package area. The equipment was done with the latest technology such as luggage racks in the ceiling area, package shelves, package racks, letter pigeonhole racks, sorting tables, folding tables, and finished mail pouch tables, pouch holders, letter pouch racks, as well as loading hatches. All of the outside doors were done as wide, single sliding doors of lightweight metal construction. A remarkable feature was the air heating and dust removal equipment that was installed for the most part below the floor. Enough fluorescent lamps in a lighting intensity not previously reached produced a good level of illumination at all workstations. In accordance with their intended use, the railroad mail cars were set up to transport all kinds of mail. All kinds of mail (letters, small packages, and packages) were processed before and during the train's run. Naturally, these cars were used mainly at night, since the bulk of the mail was shipped by the senders in the afternoon and evening and it was supposed to reach its destination the next morning. The cars were used in part in special mail trains, but their use in D express trains and E limited stop trains as well as in other types of German Federal Railroad (DB) trains was also a daily occurrence. The era of railroad mail did not end until 1997, since the German Federal Postal System now favored a fundamental restructuring that included sorting mail in newly created, automated mail distribution centers that were no longer tied to the rails.
